INS/OUTS LIST FALL 2024

As Texas State University settles into the routine of the school year, we welcome fall–even though it doesn't feel like it quite yet. Despite it being October, it is still hot. As much as I hate to admit, I still break a sweat when I walk to class. Our Texas weather does not allow for classic fall layering or thick sweaters, just yet. Or do it. The weather be damned, fashion will always prevail.

In the meantime while we wait for the cooler temperatures, I have compiled my ins and outs list for fall 2024. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.

IN:

  • Leg warmers. Are your legs feeling bare even with tights on? A pair of leg warmers the same color as your shoes might be the key.

  • Sunglasses at night. Nightlife can get bright and your eyesight is so precious.

  • Sunglasses in general. Why don’t any of you guys ever wear sunglasses? It will always be sunny here in San Marcos, and it is the perfect, subtle way to amp up your look.

  • Adidas Sambas. Black or white or any other color, I believe they are the perfect addition to a fall wardrobe.

  • Buffy Summers’ closet. She has been my style inspo ever since I discovered what a vampire slayer was.

  • Kitten heels. No other comment.

  • Stripes. I am a firm believer in stripes. I always have been, and I always will be.

  • Mixing metals. I hardly ever see anyone mix metals with jewelry. I am an avid silver-wearer, and there have been so many times where I put back a necklace because it was gold. Not anymore! I am currently on the hunt for the perfect silver and gold necklace stack.

  • Tights and shorts. Literally the cutest combo ever and I never see it anymore!! Bring it back!

  • Flare leggings/yoga pants. These pants are a staple, they are so comfy and so cute on a dress-down day. Why have flare yoga pants been hated on all these years when they're so cute?

  • Animal print. Not just our basics like cheetah. I want to see more zebra, snakeskin, tiger, fawn, giraffe, etc. Get creative with it while representing your favorite animal! I currently have a fawn print tank top on the way.

OUT:

  • Camo. No other comment.

  • Fast fashion. IDGAF about your Tik Tok Shop or your Temu or your Shein. It's time to do better for the environment and buy clothes you will wear more than once.

  • Bow print. It had its moment, now it’s time to move on.

  • Bandanas. I think there are much better things to wear on your head than a bandana. Try a hat, or a headband! I've just never been able to get on the bandana train. Also, think to yourself: do I look like a pirate or not?

  • Jordan 1s. Any print, any color; we’ve seen it all before.

  • Denim on denim. This has been out since 2010.

  • Oversized clothing. I like a good oversized piece myself, don't get it twisted, but there's a point where something can be too oversized. I'll leave that for you to determine for yourself.

  • Microtrends. Like I said before, you have to start buying clothes you'll wear more than once. When you buy something new, ask yourself: do I like this because I truly like it or because it's been on TikTok for a few days? Will I wear this next week? If the answer is no, don't buy it!

  • Going out top and jeans combo. There are so many better combos to do on a night out, so get creative with it.

  • Clean girl aesthetic. We all know that being a girl is anything but clean. It's messy, it's chaotic, it's real--so why try to be something that you're not? I'm not saying it's not cute, but I'm hoping for an aesthetic that is more authentic.

  • Saving an outfit/not outfit repeating. I cannot stress this enough. Wear whatever you want, whenever you want!!

These are all my own opinion and is not meant to offend anybody. None of this is actually factual--take my list and do what you will with it. Take what resonates, leave what doesn't. Happy fall!

xoxo,

Kira Naomi Utter
